There are many different versions of where Valentines Day came from and the reason behind sending out Valentines Cards.
One legend is of St. Valentine, the Christian martyr who
encourage marriage and love.
Then there is another possible scenario with Valentine being a prisoner and eventually found himself in love with the jailer’s daughter. The love letters he sent to her were signed “From your Valentine.”
Of course there are many more scenarios but it really doesn’t matter where this tradition comes from.
Valentines Day has become an opportunity for lovers to express their feelings. Originally the tokens of love were gifts of flowers and poems which were delivered orally.
The earliest known examples of written Valentine cards are the love letters the imprisoned Duke of Orleans sent to his wife in 1415.
Paper Valentines and Valentine Cards started popping up in the 1850′s.
Today more people send cards for Valentine’s Day than for any other holiday except Christmas.
